Injuries won’t heal if you don’t let them!

Attempting to work through injuries is one of the BIGGEST mistakes you can make. You sabotage your chances of progressing optimally by neglecting the protocols of the healing process. Healing takes time and depending on the extent of the injury, if adequate time and appropriate rehabilitation procedures are not followed you can reap the negative effects of your what was once a minor injury for months and even YEARS to come. Trust me I’m speaking from experience.

When an injury occurs within the muscles, the collagen fibers need time to reshape and rebuild. The reason why it’s not advised to work through an injury is because the injured area needs to build thick dense collagen fibers. When you push the limits of the injured area while the collagen fibers have not been able to densely develop you’re basically “reinjuring” the area and while it may not be as extreme as the initial injury it doesn’t mean that it’s not as serious. Take a scab for instances, when you peel a scab off before it has fully formed, the cut has to continually restart this process slowing down the healing process and you’ll find that it can leave an unsightly scar. There’s really no difference when this happens on the inside of your body.

I injured my wrist and shoulder extensively back in 2014 at the beginning of my calisthenics journey and because I had no knowledge about the things I know now I am now fighting a uphill battle with a 1 ton stone on my back. The damage has ”been done” and now my efforts to regain full strength are taking a lot more time and effort than they would’ve taken in the last if I followed the protocols I now know.

I’ve recently injured my patella (knee) and I am no longer able to comfortably squat a lot of resistance. Because I know my ultimate goal is to live long and preserve the integrity of my joints and ligaments I will not compromise that goal by performing extreme exercises before I am completely healed. It does prove to be a challenge to “limit” myself but it’s necessary in order to fulfill my ultimate goal.

Treat even the most basic injury with high priority for rehabilitation!
